What to know about your
Summerwood building kit

Pre-cut vs. Pre-assembled Building Kits

Assembly animation

This sample animation will take you through the assembly process of a DIY kit, and also show the difference between our Pre-Cut and Pre-Assembled kits. While the example is an 8ft. x 12ft. Palmerston, many of the steps involved are applicable to all our styles.

View our kit assembly animation to get a general idea of how our buildings go together.

Note that with the exception of most pre-fabricated gazebos, shingles are not included in our building kits. Cedar shingles and EPDM roofing (flat roofs) may be purchased from us at the time of sale. Asphalt shingles are available at your local building store. If you would like more information our sales and design experts would be happy to assist you.

All Summerwood building kits contain:

  • Detailed easy-to-follow instructions
  • Online assembly video
  • The convenience of pre-assembled doors, windows, flower boxes, shutters, and many other fixed options
  • A solid and durable floor
  • All required fasteners and hardware including screws, nails, hinges, and door handles

i) Pre-cut Format

All framing and siding components are pre-cut to fit together perfectly, the rest is up to you!

The pre-cut format is ideal for the consummate do-it-yourselfer. We've designed the product, purchased and cut all the materials, built the doors and windows, and now we're handing it over to you.

Pre-cut buildings will likely require about 50% more assembly time than pre-assembled structures, but they are also less expensive and may offer greater satisfaction once the job is done.

We apologize if the style that you are interested in is not available in a pre-cut kit format.

ii) Pre-assembled Format

Where possible, all floors, walls, and trusses are pre-assembled for quick and easy assembly.

If you have limited time or simply want to enjoy your Summerwood design as soon as possible, consider purchasing one of our pre-assembled kits. This format is designed for quick, convenient assembly, with most of the components pre-assembled and ready for you to put together on site.

Depending on the size and complexity of your design, our pre-assembled kits can generally be assembled by two minimally skilled people in one or two days.

As products increase in size (cabins, garages) and complexity (dormers, 5 sided roofs, custom options) the time required will increase. Some basic carpentry knowledge can also be helpful.

We apologize if the style that you are interested in is not available in a pre-assembled kit format.

More on our pre-assembled kit format:

  • Some assembly is still required. “Pre-assembled” means that major structural components such as walls, trusses and floors are built and framed for you.
  • Some of our roof styles deploy trusses, others deploy rafters; only the trusses are pre assembled. Rafters are pre cut to fit together during assembly. (View our 3D virtual tours to see roof style detail).
  • Windows and doors are framed allowing you to conveniently pop them into place on assembly.
  • Pre-assembled walls can be quite heavy. Depending on the size, you will need likely two or three people to assist with unloading.

Pre-cut vs. Pre-assembled Gazebos

i) Pre-cut Gazebo Format

All floor, wall, and roof materials are pre-cut to fit together perfectly, the rest is up to you!

The building components of our pre-cut gazebos are precision cut for quick assembly on site. Shingles are not included with the pre-cut kits, however for your convenience, cedar shingle bundles with cut ridge caps may be added to your order at the time of purchase.

The pre-cut format is ideal for the accomplished do-it-yourselfer. All components are precision cut to fit together perfectly.

We apologize if the gazebo kit you're interested in does not come in a pre-cut format.

Each pre-cut gazebo kit contains:

  • Detailed, easy to follow instructions that you download before receiving your gazebo
  • A generic assembly video viewed online (view here)
  • Pre-cut floor frame, boards, wall section, and roof panels
  • A complete floor
  • Pre-assembled doors, windows (for the garden houses) and screen kit (if purchased)

ii) Pre-assembled Gazebo Format

The floor, wall, and roof panels on gazebos are pre-assembled for quick and easy assembly. Even the roof panels are pre-shingled saving you a bundle of time (applies to gazebo 16 ft. and smaller).

One of the great features of our pre-assembled gazebo kits is that the floor sections, wall sections and roof panels are fully assembled. All that's left for you to do is the actual assembly.

We even apply the cedar shingles to the roof sections for you in our plant before shipping. As you can imagine, it's much easier to assemble a pre-assembled gazebo than it is a pre-cut gazebo. Simply fit your sections together and slide the roof panels into place.

Please note that due to weight considerations, it is not possible to pre-shingle roof panels for gazebos larger than 16 feet in diameter. On these structures, the roof must be shingled on site.

Each pre-assembled gazebo kit contains:

  • Detailed, easy to follow instructions that you download before receiving your gazebo
  • Online assembly video
  • Pre-shingled roof panels (cedar) with the exception of our Coventry and Montpellier models
  • Pre-assembled floor sections, wall sections and roof panels on gazebos that are 16ft. or smaller
  • Pre-assembled doors, windows and optional screen kit
  • All required hardware such as brass screws for gazebo styles
