Our measurements (i.e. 12ft. x 20ft.) are taken from the outside of the wall framing, therefore, they don't include the siding, and/or sheathing.

For true interior measurements, subtract the thickness of the wall framing; 3 ½” for 2x4 walls, and 5 ½” for 2x6 walls. Note: 2 x 4 is actually 1 ½” x 3 ½” and 2 x 6 is actually 1 ½” x 5 ½” due to the properties of "finished” lumber.

Wall Plan

Mountain Brook wall plan detail

Our cabin walls are assembled with 2x4 spruce wall studs (2x6 over 100 sq. ft.) for added strength and durability.

For true exterior dimensions, add the siding, sheathing (if applicable), and corner trim pieces. The Canexel siding is 3/8" thick, the cedar siding is 3/4" thick and the log siding is 1 1/2" thick. The wall sheathing varies from 7/16” to 3/4”. The corner trim is 3/4".

If you have any other questions pertaining to the size of your Mountain Brook cabin building, please do not hesitate to ask us, we are here to help.

Roof Framing Plan

Mountain Brook cabins are built with gable roofs, featuring a continuous ridge with two sides sloping from the center toward the walls. This roof design makes it ideal for those looking for extra headroom to add a loft studio for extra storage or living space.

Gable roofs are much easier to frame, sheath, and finish, giving the vertical wall component of a gable roof its style, known as “gable ends”.

Ventilation is easy to install. Due to its geometry and access to gable ends, roof vents can be placed on the gable ends rather than the roof itself. Consult with your contractor or roofing company, for the most effective ventilation system for your roof.

Overhang Detail

Soffits are the cedar trim pieces that are attached to the underside of the rafter ends. Fascia is typically the cedar 1x4 that’s used to cover the rafter tips and provide a nice straight level line for the bottom of your roof.

Foundations

Although the Mountain Brook cabin is well suited for a cottage patio stone or traditional patio stone foundation, depending on terrain, gradient or application, you may require more advanced foundation options. For example, Sonotube footings are ideal for situations where you’re faced with steep grades or rocky terrain, whereas concrete pad is ideal for flatter surfaces and larger cabins.

Visit our Foundations page for more details.

Popular upgrades

Enhanced Siding Package

If you are thinking of adding insulation to your building, consider adding one of our "enhanced siding packages". It's a layer of sheathing (OSB or plywood) and house wrap (Typar and optional HomeSlicker) that provides a moisture barrier to your structure. The ESP upgrade also provides additional barrier against the elements allowing the Moutanin Brook to be a four season building.

Insulation Materials

When deciding to insulate your Mountain Brook cabin you have a few options to choose from. Summerwood uses foam boards insulation for its structures. This type of insulation can be used to insulate any part of the cabin from floor to roof. Other commonly used styles of insulation are Batts and Spray foam insulation. Batts are easy to handle fiberglass sections while Spray foam is slightly more advanced and ideal for sealing around awkward spaces and smaller cracks. With these three options you are sure to have an all year round cabin.

Loft Space

If you choose to add loft space, there are a few ways of creating the space you need. One popular option is to add Dormers. This feature gives you the ability to increase headroom without changing the height of your building. The other alternative is to get a steeper roof by increasing your roof pitch in the loft space. Instead of changing your roof design, you can also increase the wall height of your Mountain Brook cabin, which will allow you to lower the loft floor to increase head room above.

One more thing to consider is how to access your loft and if you have enough space to place a ladder. You have the option of getting a lean-to-ladder or a drop-down ladder. With these options you need to ensure that ladders are positioned in line with the direction of the roof framing to allow for easy access to your loft.

Interior Cedar Siding and Framing

The Mountain Brook style allows for a wide array of interior finishes. Our cedar siding or framing interior upgrade can be incorporated on the walls and/or ceiling, providing a warm rustic feel.

Extra Overhang

The Mountain Brook style roof features a 6” overhang where the roof meets the walls. The overhang is trimmed out with a soffit and fascia board. Extra overhang is offered in increments of 6” [i.e. +6 (12”), +12 (18”)].

Finishing

Once your Mountain Brook cabin is completed, there are a few things you can do on the inside to add to the comfort and enjoyment of your new Summerwood building.

Please see Interior Finishing under Advice for more information

Insulation

If you plan to heat your Mountain Brook cabin, insulation may be added either at purchase or after-the-fact if you decide to do it later. The walls and roof are constructed in such a way that adding insulation either as an option or on your own is quite simple to do. If you’re thinking of using your cabin all year round, then insulating it is the way to go.

Electrical

The inside of our cabin styles are left exposed to easily accommodate wiring for lighting, outlets, heating equipment, whatever you have in mind. Once the installation is complete and before finishing your interior, simply have an electrician come and do his thing.

Electrical configuration option

Plumbing

Provided you have a water source nearby, your Mountain Brook cabin pipes can be run for sinks and taps. If you have something a little more elaborate in mind like a shower or toilet, best to make sure it is coordinated with the concrete pad and installation of the cabin.
