Summerwood backyard workshops are the ideal building for anyone who has a hobby, big or small. From restoring a classic car, or wood working, to pottery or painting - having space outside of your home provides a fantastic source for inspiration and creativity (not to mention some quality me time).
Speaking of creativity - one of the best things about our workshops is that our kits can be completely customized - from the ground up. Select your style, size, and add options that make sense given what you'll be using your workshop for - and do it all online.
Select from one of our following beautiful workshop styles, check out some favorites, or customize from the ground up in our online design center, then place your order online or over the phone.
When you choose Summerwood for your workshop you'll be saying yes to customization, choice and customer service. This is the heart of our philosophy and is what we do best.
Do some web searches and you'll find that no one else provides the same level of customization in a prefab workshop, period. At most, our "competitors" will offer you a basic shell with a preset number of sizes, along limited window and door choices - and that will be about all you can customize. At Summerwood you have so much to choose from! Styles galore, unique doors, windows, additional wall height, extra roof overhang, lighting, flooring, siding, partition walls, dormers, shingles, and a huge array of other options all await you in our online design center. Why would you shop anywhere else?
When you buy a workshop kit from Summerwood you'll need to select your preferred format - precut, prefabricated, or installed.
Workshops ordered in precut format will ship with all the required material measured and precut - requiring no additional measuring or cutting onsite (windows and door openings excluded). Precut kits are generally about 10% less expensive then preassembled kits, but require a little more time and skill to assemble.
Workshops ordered in the prefab format go together blazingly fast as all the wall, roof and floor sections are shipped prefabricated. Door and window openings are all precut and ready for installation. If you're an experienced do it yourselfer, or are hiring a contractor to complete the assembly process, you can expect it to take about a day - about 50% faster then precut.
For those living in a 300 Kilometer radius of our showroom in Scarborough, Ontario - we offer an installed format. If you choose this format we'll send our own install crew out to your home or vacation property and they'll whip through the build process in a day or less, depending on the complexity of your workshop. Perfect for those of us that don't want the hassle of dealing with multiple contractors, and want their workshop built quickly.
We've put together a shop full of helpful information and resources to help you with the planning and research phase of your workshop project. From issues like permits, construction details, delivery information, assembly and more - get the answers to your questions all in one easy location.
Some of the items you'll need to consider early on are permits and deciding what you're going to use for the foundation. Other important issues are where you're going to place the workshop, and what size do you need.
Give your local building permit office a quick call and explain to them what it is that you're planning on building and see if there might be any unforeseen complications you need to be aware of. Issues vary depending on where you're located - historical permits, home owners associations, conservation areas, may require you to obtain multiple permits. While this is rare, better give it some thought, make some calls, and make sure you have all the information before making a purchase.
Your workshop foundation needs some thought early on as well. Many customers have chosen a concrete slab as the foundation, which serves two purposes - a good solid workshop floor, and a good solid foundation. As an added bonus you'll save a little on your kit price, as we'll then be omitting the wooden floor from your package. If you are going to use a concrete slab, then you'll need to make arrangements with a local contractor to dig and form the pad - and then pour the concrete. Be sure to use a high quality concrete - it only costs a little more upfront, won't crack and lasts a really long time when built correctly.
Sizing up your workshop is very important - and keep in mind that anything under 110 square feet normally won't require any permits. To get a better ideas on size - get some rope and stakes and physically stake out the size you were thinking of, right where you plan on installing it. Then walk around within the space, imagining what you're going to be doing in it and think about all the items you're going to want inside it. Will there be enough room? Better to go a little larger then not large enough - it's easy to find things to store in the extra space then it is to try to deal with a space that's just not large enough.
We make ordering really easy. Start by browsing through the workshop styles or favorites, find one you like, modify it in our custom design center, then either place your order online, or save it in "My Portfolio", and then call us ask questions, and order it over the phone.

While we build an amazing product that's going to stand up to the test of time - we still like to offer our customers the piece of mind a warranty provides. We'll cover any defects in materials and workmanship for 2 years.
Our 2 year warranty doesn't cover the natural characteristics of wood, including knots, small cracks or splinters, normal expansion and contraction of lumber due to moisture, or minor grain characteristics.
You'll need to assemble your workshop within two months of shipping, as the materials may warp or shrink if left sitting for prolonged periods of time. Shrinkages and warping may also impact the actual assembly of your workshop - so plan ahead and make sure it's not left sitting for months.
We've got some great options for your workshop that will make working in it much more enjoyable, and practical. Double or overhead doors - who wants to be struggling to get things in and out of the workshop? Open things up with our complete line of beautiful and functional double doors, or really open them up with one of our durable overhead garage style doors. A must have for those that will be using their workshop to rebuild or work on cars and trucks.
Ramps - our custom ramps make it much easier to get cars, bikes and other large equipment in and out of the workshop.
Sky lights - let the light in with a custom sky light - combine this with some of our large opening windows and you certainly won't be using lights during the day in your workshop.
Insulated wall packages - keep things cool in the summer and warm in the winter. If you're intending on using the workshop year round then you'll need our insulated wall package - a wise upgrade for us hearty Canadians. Add thermal doors and windows with this package; important for workshops utilizing heating and cooling systems.
Cathedral ceilings - perfect for those doing woodworking, or any hobby where extra height would be helpful - it looks great too!
