modified it (as well as pricing). Grab a cup of tea or coffee, your partner and get comfortable in front of the computer for an hour or two. It's the best way to create
the perfect cabin, and to add your own personal style.
Photos, photos and more photos - we have a ton of cabin photos on our website and this is the most popular way to get ideas for your own cabin. See what past customers
have done, options they have added and modifications they've made. It'll give you inspiration and as the old saying goes - a picture is worth a thousand words. This
rings especially true with finding a cabin style that fits your needs.
For customers living in the Greater Toronto area, including cottage country - there are three cabin kit formats to choose from: precut, prefab, and installed.
Anywhere else in Canada there are two formats: precut and prefab.
Precut cabins make the most sense for those living outside the 300 Kilometer radius of our showroom. Shipping costs are reduced with precut kits as they take up less space
and require less skids on the truck, precut is also mandatory with some of the larger cabins, as they are simply too large to ship preassembled.
Precut kits come with everything but the shingles and require very little measuring and cutting - essentially you just need to follow the building instructions and put it
all together. Depending on your carpentry skills you may choose to hire a builder for this kit format.
Prefabricated cabins are ideal for the novice do it yourselfer as the walls come in sections and the whole cabin will go together quite quickly. Door and window openings
are precut, so there's basically no measuring or cutting required. Be sure to have several people around to help out, as wall sections can be quite heavy.
Installed cabins are the best solution for those looking for turn key cabin kits. Just select and order your cabin and we'll deliver and assemble your cabin onsite.
Since it's our installation crew who'll be doing the build, it'll get done quick as they have intimate knowledge of how our kits go together - perfect if you're in a hurry.
Keep in mind that with any of the formats you'll need to plan for your cabin's foundation before delivery, and arrange for any interior finishing that you may need.
We offer a ton of useful information to aid your planning process and you'll find it all within the information section of our site. Some of the more important
areas to read through will be permits, foundations, and site selection.
Permits are not always the first thing that we think of when we're thinking about building a cabin or Bunkie - but depending on where you're located, it should be. The permit
process can take anywhere from 2-4 weeks depending on the complexity of the project, so you'll need to make sure you've got an approved permit before purchasing your cabin kit
from us.
Foundations are another equally important issue with cabins, and the larger you go, the more thought needs to be given to them. With smaller Bunkie kits you might be able to
get away with using patio stones, or a poured concrete slab, but with larger cabins on uneven footing, you may need to look at engineered sono tubes. Since the foundation can
have such as severe impact on the structure of your cabin, it's not something that should be overlooked or skimped on.
Site selection. Next to actually selecting a cabin style, this is one of the most enjoyable aspects of the whole project. You get to imagine what it'll be like in the summer,
with the sun setting and rising, where the foliage will be in the middle of the summer, and what it would be like in the winter, should it be a year round cabin. Things to
consider are the ground and soil makeup. With large cabins, you may need to do a core sample to see what's under the top soil and how difficult it may be to dig up for the
foundation. Sometimes it's more then just a pretty spot that's involved in a final site selection.
Since the most common location for a cabin is in the woods we'll need to know specifics on exactly where you're located, and what road access is like for a large
truck in your area. For those living within the Greater Toronto area, including most of cottage country delivery is relatively inexpensive $3-700.00, for those outside of this
area, costs can range between $1-2,000.00. To determine your exact shipping costs, find the structure you're interested in and enter your postal code into the quote form and your
freight costs will be displayed, or better yet - give us a call.
Offloading/cartage fees above and beyond the standard shipping rates may apply depending on how remotely you're located. Islands are a good example of where extra charges will
apply. In these cases we'll need to arrange for a barge, or other method of delivery (winter road), for your cabin kit.
So you've selected and purchased your cabin kit, selected your site, have your building permit, the cabin kit is en-route and you're ready to begin the build process.
If you're going to be tackling the project yourself, make sure you've got some extra bodies around to help out when required. The build process itself is actually quite
simple whether you're building from a precut or prefab kit. You start with the floor, then move to the walls, followed by the roof.
We offer an online video of our typical kit assembly process, and while it's for a shed, the process remains the same regardless of the type of structure. In addition
you'll have very detailed instructions and drawings of your specific cabin kit, and as long as you have some basic carpentry skills you shouldn't have any problems. If you do
- we're here to help along with way with expert telephone support, and all sorts of online resources.
If you've opted to have a professional come in and take care of things, they'll have no trouble building one of our kits and in most case will have it done in just a day or
two, depending on the size of the cabin of course. If you need help finding a good builder in your area, let us know and we can provide a few choices for your consideration.
That should be enough information at this point, so choose one of the three starting points, have fun and enjoy your Summerwood cabin!
